Salzburg AG and Salzburg Airport sign contract for district heating connection
Construction work for district heating connection to start this year
The airport is located in the central area of Salzburg and fulfills its role as a central traffic hub for business, industry and people who want to travel. In addition to its role as a “gateway to the world”, the airport is very aware of its obligation towards the environment and ecology. The supply of heat is also not insignificant in this context. The airport building is currently still heated with gas. However, the aim is to consistently phase out oil and gas, which is why the management has now signed the contract to connect to the Salzburg AG district heating network. “People, Planet, Profit are the pillars of our strategic business orientation, the focus on sustainability is important in all business areas. As an EMAS, IOS 14001 and ISO 15001 company, we are committed to the environment and sustainability and are consistently pursuing our path to CO2 net neutrality by 2040! It was a logical step to also make the airport's heat supply sustainable and by switching to climate-friendly district heating, we are taking a big step towards our climate target, because from 2026 we will be able to save almost 510 tons of CO2 per year with district heating,” says Bettina Ganghofer, Managing Director of Salzburg Airport.
Salzburg Airport relies on sustainable heat from Salzburg AG. The contract for the airport's district heating connection was signed in April. Construction work will start in summer 2025. With a capacity of 2.8 MW, the airport will then be one of Salzburg AG's largest customers in the Salzburg-Hallein network.
Salzburg AG is setting the pace in the energy transformation. Decarbonization plays a crucial role here. The company is driving this forward with its district heating expansion. “We have a clear goal in mind under the title of decarbonizer: we want to reduce our CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and be 100% climate-neutral and sustainable by 2040. By connecting the airport to our Salzburg-Hallein district heating network, we are not only connecting one of our largest customers to the grid from 2026, we are also taking a major step towards reducing greenhouse gases. The connection is an important milestone for the expansion of district heating in the city,” says Michael Baminger, CEO of Salzburg AG.
